Festus was a career criminal with a history in Falas. The Champions Valoris encountered him at the Traveler's Boon inn.

Description

Appearance

Festus was a burly half-orc man who wore chef's clothing at the Traveler's Boon. He had a rough voice.

Personality

Festus was a fairly taciturn man, although he was known to have anger issues. These anger issues were extreme enough to lead Festus to commit (or attempt) murder on multiple occasions.

Biography

Background

Festus seems to be from Falas. His eventual partner in crime, Donatello, was unaware of whether or not he had any family. His criminal record included murder, robbery, and arson. At some point, he met Donatello and the two became a team, with Festus being considered the more volatile of the two. Eventually, a bounty was placed on Festus for his capture, dead or alive. Festus and Donatello found themselves at the Traveler's Boon, an inn about a day's travel from Falas. Festus killed the innkeepers and, following his life's dream, became the new chef. He prepared food for travelers who were tricked by Donatello into thinking they needed to stay the night. He only cooked pheasant, regardless of what his guests ordered, and frequently bungled the preparation: undercooking some, burning others to cinders, leaving some of the meat completely unseasoned, and adding so much pepper to some servings that they were nigh inedible. At night, Festus would stand guard after Donatello pilfered their guests' belongings, discouraging savvy travelers from reclaiming their items.

The Heart of the Empire

Donatello convinced the Champions Valoris to spend the night at the Traveler's Boon, where they experienced Festus's awful cooking. They overheard an argument between Festus and Donatello about the quality of his food. However, none of them met Festus in person until they had discovered Donatello's ruse and found Festus standing guard in the hallway. When most of the adventurers were not content to wait out the night in their rooms, with Erak particularly intent on recovering the stolen Qbby, Festus yelled to Donatello downstairs that he was going to just kill them. Sadly for Festus, he was no match for several adventurers fighting together, and his life ended with one of Jorah's crossbow bolts in his eye. After Donatello fled the scene, Kilwin (with assistance from Reides) gave Festus a burial. However, Festus's grave was disturbed by the guards of Falas, who needed to confirm his death in order to award Festus's bounty to the Champions Valoris.

Character Information

Goals

While Festus's career trajectory seemed to involve many violent crimes, his actual dream was to cook in an inn. He briefly achieved his life's dream when he and Donatello commandeered the Traveler's Boon, although he was not very good at it and died about two weeks afterward.

Abilities

Festus was quite strong and muscular and was skilled with a spear. An ability he certainly did not possess is skill with culinarian's tools.

Relationships

Festus and Donatello

While Donatello and Festus were business partners for quite some time, they did not seem to consistently get along. They bickered over Festus's bad cooking, as well as his apparent unwillingness to learn more about his new trade. Donatello also did not seem to know much about Festus's background. However, while Festus was known to have violent outbursts of anger, Donatello was able to call him "impossible" in frustration without fear of reprisals and Festus referred to Donatello as "Don," implying some degree of friendship between the two men.
