Odan, sometimes called Moradin by his dwarven followers, is the dwarvish god of crafts and the forge.
Description[edit | edit source]
Iconography[edit | edit source]
Odan is represented by a hammer and anvil. Some statues depict him as a dwarven man holding a large hammer. The expletive "Odan's beard" (as well as "Moradin's beard") implies that, when shown in a more humanoid form, he has a beard.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Odan is thought to be an honorable but stern god. He is appreciative of fine craftsmanship and weaponsmithing and seems to really hate demons.
Province and Theology[edit | edit source]
Odan is primarily worshiped by dwarves, especially dwarven smiths, although he has followers of other races as well. Producing fine craftsmanship is considered a way to honor him. Hoping that Odan builds someone a sturdy bridge is a traditional dwarven way of wishing them safe travels.
Involvement[edit | edit source]
Odan was revered by the Earthbreaker clan, who left a shrine to him behind when they were ousted from Earthbreaker Hall. A lingering spirit of a dwarf who died there continued to worship him after death. The forge in the Temple of the Abyssal Guardians was also dedicated to Odan. In order to access the temple's innermost chamber, each occupant of the temple was required to place one of their weapons into the forge, tributing it to Odan. If done properly, the heat of the forge wouldn't cause the weapons to melt. However, several weapons left around the forge were placed inside it by the Champions Valoris, and these simply melted. An attempt to tribute a sword eerily similar to the Everburning Longsword resulted in the sword being expelled out of the forge into a nearby lava flow. Presumably, Odan was displeased by it. It is possible, but unknown, that Odan's presence in the Temple of the Abyssal Guardians means that he was involved in the creation of the Abyssal Crests, or at least their transformation into items with demon-quelling properties. A priest of Moradin is also one of the central characters of the romance novel The Woodcutter and the Smithy Priest. The priest visits a woodcutter to purchase wood for use in his crafts. The woodcutter provides it and, some time after the encounter, realizes his axe has grown dull and visits the priest for assistance. While the woodcutter lacks gold, the priest has ideas about alternative payment. The novel was read by most of the Champions Valoris on their way to confront the Burning Knight for the last time.
